Seemingly dominating this seasons trends once again this year, the classic puffer jacket is being sported by just about anyone. As the adoration of puffer jacket decreased after the 80’s, it became an item which dads threw on to complete mundane activities such as popping to the shop, or possibly taking the dog for a stroll. But in recent years, the puffer has surged onto the high street in addition to its countless features upon the runway. But this sparks the question, what was the catalyst for this sudden movement for the puffer jacket in order for it to become such a vast trend?
Revived by Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia paraded a true red puffer
jacket which fell slightly off the models shoulders over a high neck
shirt down the catwalk which although may have seemed simplistic,
it ignited the spark for the resurgence of the classic coat. Gvasalia's
influence on the industry stems precisely from his anti-fashion ethos,
as his initial idea with any clothes he creates is always pin pointed
to one idea: how to make the population desire something they
already own?
Other fashion houses soon followed, such as Stella McCartney who
is consistently able to modernize fashion ideas into more practical
ways. In her AW16 collection, she put her unique stamp on her
the puffer, intertwining a more luxury feel providing us with rich
autumnal shades such as dark navy and a rust emerged
on a velvet finish to create an incredibly sophisticated coat.
As time has passed, its near impossible to name a fashion house
who hasn’t experimented with this trend and incorporated their own
style into one of the most iconic jackets there is at this current
moment as the craze continuously grows. High street brands such
as Topshop and Urban Outfitters, to online stores such as
Missguided have grasped onto this trend in order to stay in line with
this movement. I have accumulated my favourite high street pieces
below for anyone who is interested in experimenting and hopes to
integrate this item into their wardrobe.
As an owner of a handful of these jackets, my main tip within styling
the puffer is that the remainder of your outfit should be slimline
in order to look on-trend, consequently avoiding of any
misinterpretation of identifying as the Michelin Man.
